Solemusic Profile
Founded in 1996 by Stevie Middleton, Solemusic’s musical foundation is black dance music. The contributors reads like a who’s who in house music and include Basement Jaxx, Joey Negro, Terry Hunter, Rainy City, DJQ, DJ Spinna, The Jigmastas, Cooly's Hot Box, Sandy Rivera/KOT, Milton Jackson, Inland Knights, Frankie Feliciano, Phil Asher, Sounds of Life, Fred Everything, Todd Gardner, Lego, Swirl People, Basement Boys, Homecookin, Bugz in the Attic, Jay Tripwire, ATFC, Richard Earnshaw, Liquid People, The Beginerz and Open Door.
Originally associated with twelve-inch releases, Solemusic has grown to put out compilations (Solevisions/Phuturesole/Solebeats) and artist albums (notably Open Door and Homecookin' from Bugz in the Attic). - Local DJ Harri’s Daddy’s Favourite tune ‘I feel Good things for you’ breaks the top Forty and is used as the basis for the title music of cult TV programme Queer as Folk.
- A little known underground production outfit from London named Basement Jaxx remixes one of Solemusic’s acts to critical acclaim.
- Up and coming US based producer Sandy Rivera (KOT) asks to remix for the label.
- DJ Spinna takes a trip to Glasgow to DJ one night, ends up staying for two weeks, recording three hip hop tracks and makes his first ever house track.
- Two of Cooly’s Hot Boxes releases are to date Sole’s biggest ever sellers with ‘What a Surprise’ and ‘Make Me Happy’ selling over 50000 copies.
- Sole discovers the remarkable talent of a young producer named Milton Jackson who goes on to blow away the critics and the record buying public alike, with his prodigious talent. He releases records on Tronicsole as well as doing remixes for Sole.
- The album from (New York) band Open Door receives critical acclaim especially for it’s sublime cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Breathe’ that finds its way onto nearly 100 compilations. Another track is used on cult TV series Nip and Tuck.
- Solemusic label tracks have found their way on to over 1000 compilations including the infamous Hed Kandi and Ministry albums as well as the more sophisticated BBE and Another Late Night series.
- The dancefloor orientated Clubsole imprint has dominated DJ magazines Hype chart and has had lots of support from the Radio 1 dance shows. Its releases have never been out of the top ten with three number ones and three number twos. Sales have grown exponentially with every release.
Solemusic is one of the longest running independent house labels, with it’s supporters sounding like a who’s who of global house with the likes of Roger Sanchez, Eric Morillo, Joey Negro, Kerri Chandler, Timmy Regisford, Mousse T, MAW, Dimitri from Paris, DJ Gregory, Spiller and Claudio Coccolutto to name but a very few. It’s label tours have reached the four corners of the globe, from Chicago to Sydney, New York to Tokyo, Moscow to Kuala Lumpur, there aren’t many clubbing cities that haven’t been touched by the solemusic DJing experience. Solemusic also continue to promote many exciting line ups in Glasgow and Edinburgh areas.
